Women should never have to choose between speaking up and staying safe. Yet, violence against women continues to affect women in homes, relationships, workplace, and communities. Abuse, whether physical, emotional, sexual, or psychological, should never be dismissed as a private matter.
Violence against women is not a normal part of life; it is a violation of human dignity and rights. Violence can leave lasting physical and emotional consequences, while fear and stigma can prevent victims from seeking help. In the Philippines, Republic Act No. 9262, or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004, recognizes acts such as physical, sexual, psychological, and economic abuse as forms of violence covered by the law. However, laws alone cannot end abuse. Families, Schools, Communities, and authorities must help create environments where victims are heard, protected, and treated with dignity.
Ending violence against women requires more than telling victims to be brave; it requires society to prevent abuse and hold perpetrators accountable. No relationship, tradition, or circumstances gives anyone the right to harm another person. A woman’s voice deserves to be heard, her safety deserves to be protected, and her dignity should never be negotiable.
