Steve Yastin Matbagon, representative of Mandaue City Comprehensive National High School (MCCNHS) secured 3rd place in the Chess Team Category during the Division Meet held September 5-6 at Subangdaku Elementary School.
His Division finish came after placing 2nd in the Boys Secondary category at the District Meet on September 4 at Mandaue City Central School.
“Steve really does have those 3D’s: the Discipline, Determination, and Dedication for his chess journey during the competition,” According to his coach, Ma’am Descartin.
However, Matbagon identified endurance as an area he needs to improve. After playing several games, he struggled to maintain his performance and keep up with other competitors.
“What I’m hoping to improve in my chess skills is my overall endurance in playing the games because last Division Meet, I wasn’t really able to keep up with other people. After a few games, I was already weak.”
With consecutive podium finishes at the District and Divison Meets, Matbagon now aims to improve his endurance and maintain his performance throughout multiple games.
